 2017 Preview

Shelby County completed the 2016 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Shelby County just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 5A region five with a 2-5 region record.

The Wildcats improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2009. The Wildcats won as many games as in any season since 2009. The Wildcats have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year.

Since 2010, the Shelby County football program has struggled with a record of 19-51.

Over the past 25 seasons, Shelby County has managed to compile a record of 106-157. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 5A and 285th in the AHSAA.

The Wildcats are led by head coach Heath Childers who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-19 over the past three seasons at Shelby County. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Childers.

Coach Childers' overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 11-19 (36.7%).

The Shelby County Wildcats will play in Class 5A region five during the 2017 season.

It will be an uphill battle for the Wildcats if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season.

The Wildcats open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Holt on Friday, September 1 at Wildcats Stadium. Last year the Holt Ironmen finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 4A region four. The Ironmen closed out the regular season with a loss to Brookwood by a score of 50-12.

Shelby County and Holt have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 2-0-0 record against the Ironmen. They last met in 2016 with Shelby County winning by a score of 49-12.
